Australia’s coastal regions are highly vulnerable to extreme weather events, including tropical cyclones and major flooding. The March 2021 floods alone resulted in A$2.9 billion in damages, demonstrating the urgent need for:

  • Reliable real-time monitoring of rising water levels.
  • Automated flood warnings to reduce human risk and property damage.
  • Integration of smart sensor data with meteorological and hydrological data sources.
  • Scalable, cloud-based disaster response tools to enhance emergency management efforts.

Objectives
  • Live streaming situational awareness cameras installed across key flood-prone areas in New South Wales and Queensland.
  • Automated flood warning systems using IoT-connected sensor devices to monitor water levels.
  • Integration with Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) data, improving flood prediction accuracy.
  • Smart alerting systems, triggering real-time notifications and automated flood warning signs on affected roadways.
